   runtt21: A new one: if I install the sound mixer module/gadget, ALSAconfig doesn't get the sound to work. In fact, if I try to run ALSAconfig with the mixer gadget installed, X windows crashes to TTY. Startx gets it back again. If instead I uninstall the mixer gadget and the install the systray module/gadget, sound works. ??? Which is cool, because this machine has a better set of speakers than my dual core.

   And the Connection Manager gadget won't work at all, although the wireless indicator one does.

   And the Pup Radio icon is the same question mark as the help icon when shrunk.

   Quirky! But it does look a lot better than the cluttered Puppy desktop. This is beginning to intrigue me. Are you stuck compiling each individual module/gadget one at a time? Or is the debugging worse than that?

   All of the "Extra modules" have to be compiled one at a time. Now I am running 520 but it has an updated version of e that I am testing. The new mixer gadget is working for me . I know that doesn't really help you at the moment. I have found that it really depends on your hardware or your sound card. Most of the time it is best to use the puppy controls/options if e doesn't work for you.We are still working on the final of 520 .Testing the "fixes" I am waiting to hear back from our testers.

   the alsa configuration tool in my wizard also crashes my X server, dropping me to a shell. The hardware is an HP P-4 single core desktop with an intel i-810 sound chip.
   Otherwise I really love this new Macpup and plan to do an HD install on my old system- if the sound issue is fixed. Gotta have the sound.

   BTW, Macpup 3.0 gave me no alsa probs on the same pc. I did not even have to configure it.

   Update. I ran alsaconf from a shell. It ran okay and completed, but still no sound. Unmuted and turned volume up on everything as well. The Pup configurator for alsa still crashes the x server.

   Did you use the alsa mixer under multimedia ?

   Yes, I did use the alsa mixer. it is not located in the Multimedia menu.

   Fox 3 and mp511 use very different puppys as their base. Fox 3 is going to work better on older computers . You may have to stay with it. I dont know that much about alsa and really cant do much about your issue.
