  1. Howdy, I went ahead and installed Skype Pet Beta Static 2.1.0.47.
First, I run AntiX 8.2 also off of SD Flash drive also with Skype Installed in it also. (Same durn problem as Puppy with alsamixer)

The problem I am having, regardless of Distro, Is the alsamixer settings. Turn up one of the 2 front mic sliders to high. Screeching Feedback. Turn up the mic boost to max. Static.

Running alsa sound wizard and reconfiguring sound card didn't change symptoms. Even saved new modprobe (said Yes). Not to blame MacPup or Puppy Because Debian Based Distros do it to. Changing sound options in skype to intel from auto doesn't improve things. Unticking box so Skype doesn't control mixer settings doesn't improve the problem either. I am probably just barking in the wind here,LOL.

Next step was to try MHwaveedit recorder to see if I could record sound, VU Meter wouldn't budge so of course playback wouldn't play nada. Batting .OOO here so far. More than likely alsa mixers fault. Sound can be such a pain sometimes in Linux.

Zmixer mic is turned up to max. So exploring further logged in to JWM. Speaker icon in taskbar has a red X next to it. Left click speaker. Slider is at bottom. So I move it to max. Red X stays. Left click speaker icon. Slider is back down to bottom.

Now the strange thing is. My sound works. Test call for echo123 I can hear the prompt from skype. All other sounds work also in flash video and mp3s I have on file. So it is just a mic thing. I am not a guru with Linux. Just a Biker that is a Linux user. I usually google and try to research first on why stuff won't work. But this has me stymied. Because I blew away Xandros 4 (which had skype, and it worked, video and all). Video works in Macpup with Skype also so that isn't a issue. Just the damn mic, and alsa mixer has a hissy fit if I max out front mic and mic boost. Sheesh. Reinstalling Xandros just to get Skype working is not in my Mindset. I like Macpup. So if anybody with a EEEPC 900 running skype successfully in Macpup, please give a hollar. Hell, anybody that can point me on what to do just hollar. Thanks for listening to my looooong post. You got a good Distro here runtt21. Happy Trails, Rok

  2. Today, I just booted up to JWM instead of EI7. Speaker icon doesn't have the red X next to it today. Slider on volume control is staying up also. Will try to get mhWaveedit to give me rocorded file first. That way I know mic is being picked up. Fiddle with alsa mixer some more to I guess.

I think it may be something with the Asus EEE hardware that puppy doesn't want to play with .I ran Skype on my Toshbia laptop and once i turn up the mic in the asla mixer it was good to go.

  4. It has to do with alsa runt. I just fixed the same problem on a Acer Aspire One running Easy Peasy 1.5 (Ubuntu 8.10) alsa 1.0.17.

Upgrading and installing alsa 1.0.22.1 put a fix to it. Skype and Mic (which screeched and scratched) on that laptiop also now work flawlessly with the mic. I used this thread below to fix it.

Now to search for a Puppy 4.31 alsa 1.0.22.1 Pet pkg. (I hope I get lucky)

Don't know if that will fix it. The Upgrade script took about 10 minutes total to run in terminal and did a lot of installing, make, and compiling. From alsa oss to you name it. Happy trails, Rok

  6. Well, they got a bin file from
    http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Main_Page

which is in tar.bz2 format. I aint slick enough yet to turn it into a pet pkg yet. Never had to make a pet pkg before. Time to do some more searching.

It depends on where the bin file goes if it just /bin or /usr/bin . Make a folder in /root called asla or something like that. If its just /bin make a new folder in there call bin OR call it usr and inside that make a folder called bin. Move the file where it goes. Back out into /root. Open a terminal there and run dir2pet asla . Answer the few questions and your good to go.

  8. cat /proc/asound/version in Macpup is

Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.20.

    Not that far behind 1.0.22.1

Downloaded and Extracted 10.0.22.1. There are 26 folders, and 30 or so text, and sh files also. I got some learning to do I guess.

  9. Consider this solved. Didn't need the Alsa 1.0.22.1 driver on my EEEPC 900. I booted into Debian which has the Alsa 1.0.17 driver. I edited /etc/modprobe.conf and added line to file

(I did this both with Puppy and AntiX 8.2. Settings are the same for both alsa 1.0.17 and alsa 1.0.20)

    options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig 3-stack

    reboot
    open alsamixer and select F5
Turn Capture and front mic up. scroll all the way to the right and select front mic
    Close alsa mixer
Open mhWaveedit and in edit select preferences
    Select Alsa as my driver
Close and then reopen mhWaveedit so changes will stick
Pick record, CD quality 16 bit so I get 2 VU meters. The needles are jumping around like breeding jackelopes.
Record and hit stop. Then play. I got crystal clear playback.
Close mhWavedit after saying do not save.

Opened Skype. Test Video. I have it.
Make Test call with echo 123. Playback is crystal clear with no static.

    Alsa mixer settings are:
    1. Master 100%
    2. PCM 100%
3.Headphone is non adjustable, but headphones work
    4. Front 92%
    5. Hit key F5
    6. Front Mic 84%
    7.Line 71%
    8. CD 71%
    10.Mic 100%
    11. IEC958 non adjustable
    12. IEC958D non adjustable
    13.Capture 84%
    14. Beep 71%
    15. Digital 82%
    17. input so Front Mic

I am posting these settings in case any other EEEPC user that installs Macpup has Mic problems or Skype Problems. Nobody posts their alsa settings/configuration on the net. Mine was all hunt and peck, search and experiment, trial and error. Happy Trails, Rok
