  1. I don't know if I'll be able to give MacPup a test or not. I have an nVidia motherboard chipset that messes up the video until I get the right driver installed. This means that almost all distro LiveCDs look bad (Sabayon was the exception). However, with the exception of MacPup, LiveCDs have enough showing so that I can install them to the hard drive and get the video fixed. Whatever is at the bottom of the MacPup screen doesn't show, and there's not much in the right-click menu other than the terminal. Maybe I could execute the Puppy Universal Installer from the command line if I knew what the command is.

left click on the desktop should open the main menus , try running with xvesa the next time you run and see what happens.

  3. Left click? (hitting forehead with hand) Yes, that got it done.

And yes, xvesa gave me a desktop I could use, although it's not centered quite correctly.

After I finished the frugal install and rebooted, I selected xorg, and then I installed the 190 nVidia driver .pet. Unfortunately, it didn't work and X was broken until I went back to xvesa. No time now, but I'm going to try copying the /etc/X11/xorg.conf from the successful Puppy 4.3.1 installation.

Thanks for the good suggestions. I'm looking forward to exploring this Puppy.

I think you may need to use 4.3.0 if that dosen't work.

  5. I'm delighted to say that it worked, and I have good xorg video now. I used the 185 driver instead of the 190, because that's the one I use in Ubuntu Karmic. After installing it, which broke X as before, I deleted xorg.conf and copied over the one from my standard Puppy 4.3.1 install.

    I should have retained the Macpup-installed xorg.conf for comparison, but I didn't.
