First impressions from a guy who has installed many Linux distros. These are my opinions. These are not meant to bash Macpup, only to relate my experience and how I see it.
I set up a default VirtualBox VM and booted the MacPup Live CD.
On the boot screen it says Macpup and Macpup - Ram : Whats the difference? There is nothing to indicate the difference even pressing the F1 button for Help. This should be fixed. Going back to the Macpup website, there is nothing on this.. no pages in fact detailing about the product accept for a tiny video showing off a few features after it's installed. It is the worst distro page for information I have ever seen.
Hitting one or the other option boots the live desktop. I understand it's based off Enlightenment but don't you think for a live Cd newbies are going to look at you could have at least (the very least) put an icon in the dock for an installer? I had to go searching for the buried installer and when I could not find it, a Google search brought me to the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tq-ki7qLoao. I found out you had to partition your drive before the Universal Installer option would show up in the menu. This is backwards from every distro I have ever used (as someone who is geared to the desktop) As I am in marketing, it seems like the folks who made this distro really do not want anyone to use it because marketing wise, they have made all the worst choices when it comes to ease of install and information about the installation.
So I watch the video and decide to install this to the Virtual Hard Drive
I have watched the video here, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tq-ki7qLoao but had to turn off the sound and watch very closely in full screen mode because I can hardly understand the guy, (no offense, I'm American and not used to his accent) Someone should make another clearer version of this install process.
I get Gparted going only to find I cannot manipulate my partition full of unallocated space to format it because the mouse integration is so bad in the VM, I cannot cause it to hover over the correct menu choices. I know this may not be a fault of MacPup, just relating my experience/trouble.
Can anyone help me get passed this?
(I was drawn to MacPup because I was looking to see if anyone made a Mac clone distro, much like the popular XP Linux distro was for Windows XP)
Thank you.
