I left out one important step. I can be flaky like that sometimes writing instructions because I know what to do in my mind but forget to transfer that to the keyboard.

One should use the test urls button first before downloading.

Yeah. Pendrive installs (frugal installs) take forever to save to a large save file. I bet (just a guess) your personal save file is 1 gig or more. Pendrive write speeds are slow at best depending on how much you spend on a good pendrive with fast write speeds. Platter drives and SSD drives like on my EEEPCs write a bit faster than pen drives or sd flash cards like class4 cards.

I am broke half the time but if funds provide. I will be investing in some class 10 flash drives eventually.

I find it hilarious when a person expects a MB (mega byte) distro to have the same features as a GB (giga byte) distro.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

I find it amazing how full featured a MB distro is actually. But then. I like chopper motor cycles instead of full dressers. I run Ubuntu 10.04LTS, AntiX, Racy Puppy Linux, MacPUP, Puppeee, and have cd racks piled up with old isos from GNUsense and Mepis, Xnoppix,Slitaz,Absolute Linux,Slitaz,NimbleX, you name it. I have probably burned it and ran it.

In the years since I have powered on my first computer, (boy was I clueless back then). The first thing I noticed. Was the price of operating systems and software disks on store shelves. Second thing I noticed was Eulas and DRM.

Being a free spirit of sorts. I began exploring any options from freedos to Linux.
GB distros helped me learn Linux much easier. As I learned the inner workings of how file structures are laid out and how to use a terminal. I found myself wanting to slim down my options on what I would run. MB distros fill this niche.

If a clueless first time computer user with the gear that can handle it. Then by all means go with a GB distro. How ever. If you are broke financially and run a old Laptop with a P3 processor and 256MB of ram. Then your options start to shrink as to what will run OK (for free I might add).

I am so appreciative of the hard work Puppy Developers and other Lightweight Linux developers do for guys like me that I put my wallet where my mouth is and donate time to make operating light weight distros easier for new users of a distro or old computer. Be glad that these options are available folks. Macpup and Puppy in general is very user friendly once you learn how it works. Also once you learn how to search for answers.

My best way to put it. You are used to driving a car or truck. Now you have to learn how to drive a motorcycle. Both do the same tasks. But operating them is totally different.

I am not a tech, script kiddie, developer, or software engineer. I am a tattooed, overgrown, GED educated, Linux Biker.

Happy Trails, Rok

Best Wishes to everyone .. yes I concur and agree that many of the derivatives of Puppy linux are not as user-friendly as Ubuntu.. Linux Mint.. and so on .. in the last few days i have kicked the tires of many variations of puppy linux once again .. : ) also i have noticed that Slitaz ( great distro ) has also went into that "gray" area of fiddling .. leaving me at the command line only .. hmmmm
(with their current iso downloads ) but then again .. who knows? down the line many variations of puppy linux might have more fascinating scripts .. i have Linux Mint 12 and XP on mine .. i need to find something like xpud .. puppy.. slitaz that i can use for my current project ... slax was interesting but really slow when viewing javascript gallery .. **** however, the challenge will continue to be .. which distro fits your particular wants, needs or wishes.. now it is show time for macpup .. in a few minutes.. i would much rather have a very large diversity of distros to kick the tires .. instead of being "stuck" with microsoft ..

I took the advice and did a full install (following the instructions of SneekyLinux) on my heavily partitioned hd and I think it is working :)! The only setting that doesn't save is my screen resolution and I can live with that. Looking forward to using the system on a daily basis, thank you for the fast support.

I really appreciate the effort and the pet downloads, installs and works like it should, but there seems to be a problem with the actual save process at shutdown even when folders are specified. I've been trying both usb (although my usb brand is known for having issues when booting lucid) and hd save. Could a full install to harddrive get rid of these problems (so far been running from cd) or would the outcome likely be the same? Otherwise I might try it on another pc soon.

I have seen a few post( that I can't seem to find now) on the puppy forum about this kind of issue.I remember it's hardware related. Any way, I have uploaded a version of sinbars app that should let you make a save file directly. It's the MP-save-1.pet in the test folder on my macpup page.

YellowPup ha detto: I've been trying two different versions of macpup, the latest 5.2.8 v2 and I'm not being asked for a save location at my first shutdown and I always have to manually setup the desktop every time I start so it's not being saved somewhere I don't know about. Any suggestions how to solve this? (Running from cd)

I have seen this happen once before on pendrive when I was testing v2 runtt21. I never mentioned this because I thought it was a fluke because it only happened on one computer out of many I tested with.

You know how you get bleary eyed and figure, "It must be PEBAK related" when it only happens once on only one computer. Made me do a double take, I rebooted a few times just to make sure I was not imagining it or maybe just a one off thing. Same pendrive in another computer worked OK as far as save went. Not a problem on other computers I tested on also. Only that one unit (I don't remember which one though). Weird, huh? Now you see why I did not mention this. Kinda like a UFO report.

The md5sum of the iso is the same as the one supplied. I have not tried lucid Puppy only a previous version of macpup with the same result. The computer just shuts off and there is no message. Not having any problems running macpup from the cd apart from the savefile issue.

Did you md5sum your .iso downloads first?

I've been trying two different versions of macpup, the latest 5.2.8 v2 and I'm not being asked for a save location at my first shutdown and I always have to manually setup the desktop every time I start so it's not being saved somewhere I don't know about. Any suggestions how to solve this? (Running from cd)

I have to agree with you on moving on. There is just too much to manually configure on Macpup and Puppy that is done automatically on other distro's without the worry of messing things up. I still have Macpup on a flash drive, but hardly use it since installing Ultimate Edition, and Kubuntu.
Puppy Linux is just not for a novice or even anyone that wants things to just work, the menu is very confusing and there are just too many options as far as programs go. Why there aren't scripts written in it to do the guess work for the user/installer? Various Grub installers just confuses people, myself included, and I multiboot 5 operating systems without any problem since Ubuntu automatically sets it all up, just edit entries is all I need to worry about. I am not saying Puppy Linux and Macpup are lacking or bad, just not very end user friendly. For one example, having to manualy start the network is not understandable, people just want to connect their cable or click on their network and go, not messing around with setting etc... at least I don't want to. The artwork is great and the desktops are beautiful. Unfortunately I have moved on also, I want to be productive with the software that is on my computer, not spend my time messing with finding how to use it, how to install it without messing up my current configuration. There is hope but not until the system is cleaned up, Grub is updated to resemble the way Ubuntu has it auto configured to install and just be right the first time. I keep checking the new releases for changes that make things easier, and Puppy has improved, but there is a long way to go before I can use it or install it easily. Best wishes Puppy/Macpup.

Thanks for all the replies. I never heard of grub4dos, and I have been using ubuntu and debian for a while now. Sadly all this is very much more complicated than I have the mental space for so I will be going for one of the simpler distros which behaves in the way I am used to. Sad though, I would have gone to a fair amount of trouble just to have that gorgeous clock on my desktop! Best of luck with it all everyone.

While your setup is something I am unfamiliar with since I don't use nvidia pet or dual monitors.

Maybe I can give you a idea. You may need to grep or look for which driver is loading on boot up that is overwriting your the newly saved xorg.conf file. Then google/search how to blacklist it. Then make the changes you need to make.

Like I said. This is unknown turf for me.
